Three Essex-based sailors have successfully sailed a rare Dutch barge from Yacht Havens' Dutch marina, Jachthaven Biesbosch, to Fambridge Yacht Haven.

The 52" Dutch Barge, Drie Gebroeders, is a berth holder at Fambridge Yacht Haven but had taken advantage of the reciprocal berthing arrangement at Jachthaven Biesbosch in the Netherlands. After an extended period exploring the stunning Biesbosch National Park and endless Dutch waterways, the boat returned to Essex in preparation for spring.

Sailing by simple hand-bearing compasses and printed charts, the team of three left Jachthaven Biesbosch and navigated through the stunning canal system on the River Amer. By unstepping the mast, the team were able to sail under Moerdijk Bridge before stopping at the coastal town of Vlissingen.

The three man crew consisted of Colin Stracey (Chief Instructor at First Class Sailing East Coast), Phil Jarvis (Cruising Instructor) and Andy Barker (Yachtmaster)

Leaving Vlissingen at 1600, they caught the tide and headed due west, before leaving the European mainland on the Dutch/Belgian border. After arriving at Long Sand Head, off the eastern Kent coast, in the early hours of the following morning, the crew had a short sail to reach the River Crouch and Fambridge Yacht Haven.

Commenting on the trip, Skipper Colin said, "We do not normally get involved in delivering vessels, but the opportunity to sail a Dutch barge from Jachthaven Biesbosch to our home in the picturesque Essex Village of North Fambridge was just too enticing!"
