The classic Clyde one design yachts will be sailing down the river from Gareloch as part of their Mid-Summer Race to Largs. These beautiful boats will overnight at the Yacht Haven before cruising back on the Sunday.
About the Class - The fact that the Gareloch One Design class is still complete and active after 80 years of sailing belies a turbulent history of migration from home waters after the invasion of the Norwegian Dragons – introduced to British waters by Clyde owners. At various times the class has been active on the Gareloch, the Firth of Forth and at Aldeburgh in Suffolk.
Built in 1924, the Gareloch One Design Class numbered just 16 beautiful ton and a half, classically profiled yachts, designed and built by McGruers. It is doubtful whether anyone in 1924 would have expected the entire fleet to be racing today but the Class does remain in great heart and rejuvenated after much celebration of its 90th anniversary in 2014.
Based in Gareloch, to the north of Largs and past Rhu, the class race under the Burgee of the Royal Norther and Clyde Yacht Club.
