Largs Yacht Haven's Hoist Driver has won Dinghy Of The Week at the Peelports Largs Regatta Week.
The Haven Team at Largs Yacht Haven had a busy week providing berthing for Largs Regatta Week competitors. However, Hoist Driver Ian Kent had a very busy week by winning the Dinghy Of The Week with this brother David (Scottish Sailing Institute Manager) in their Hurricane catamaran.
Once again, the Peelports Largs Regatta Week was well supported on and off the water. Varying conditions throughout the week meant sailors were challenged every day. The opening weekend was plagued with no wind on Saturday but hot 40 knot easterlies on Sunday which made for spectacular sailing. The Firth of Clyde Coastal Rowing club joined in with Largs Regatta Week by hosting their annual regatta. Teams from all over Scotland raced skiffs in near-perfect conditions with the finish-line off the Pencil Monument allowing for excellent spectator vantage points along the waterfront. There was an outstanding amount of entries is all sailing fleets including 64 competing dinghies in the midweek evening series and 52 in the Two Handed Race.
Congratulations to Sloop John T (sailed by I and G Thomson) who won the overall regatta.
Scottish Two Handed Race
The ever popular Scottish Two Handed Race, forming the final weekend of Peelports Largs Regatta Week 2015, brought excitement and drama as well as some record breaking results. A 20 knot south easterly breeze gave all six classes a tough beat southwards either round Arran or the shorter route round Holy Island, and then a roller coaster run back through the Tan to the finish line off Largs Sailing Club. Racing with only with two crew sail handling was challenged especially on the downwind legs where several spectacular broaches were seen, as well as some sail tearing spinnaker wraps. The Sadler 25, Auk, suffered a dismasting off Corrie and was escorted back safely to the Yacht Haven partly by Lamlash and Largs lifeboats.
On the long course round Arran it was the last boat home, Saboo (McIlwraith and Scott), fresh from their 3rd place in the Two Handed Azores and Back Race this summer, who took the top prize on handicap from Warrior (Fullerton and Moss) despite finishing almost two hours earlier.
On the shorter inshore course it was the Etchells, Excalibur (Brian Young and Ross Hepburn) who claimed victory by a mere 8 seconds over the Loch Long, Pied Piper (MacLeod and Stewart). This went towards Excalibur being awarded Yacht of the Week 2015 for the best performance throughout the regatta.
