Both the berth holders and the visiting public at Lymington Yacht Haven enjoyed a day of leisure activities on and off the water on Sunday 19 August when they attended a special Open Day, one in a series of 'Active Marina' events initiated by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association).
It was the first time that the Yacht Haven had opened its gates to everyone in this way, and it was a huge success as hundreds of people enjoyed a whole host of activities in a large marquee overlooking the marina in the glorious sunshine.
The Haven Bar at Lymington Yacht Haven kindly supplied free bacon rolls and coffee to welcome the crowds in the morning, while in the afternoon visitors sampled ice creams from the on-site Nick Cox Chandlery.
Fergus Anderson, the RYA's representative, was on hand to answer questions about how newcomers to boating could get started on the water. An impressive RYA Dinghy Sailing Simulator offered visitors of all ages the chance to have a go at the helm of a dinghy without putting a toe in the water!
Some visitors were able to get out on the water on a 50ft Classic Motor Yacht and others went out with Solent RIB Charters for some fast lapping in the western Solent within close reach of Hurst Castle. All proceeds made on the day were donated to the RNLI.
The majority of Yacht Haven's business tenants attended the event and chatted to Berth Holders and visitors about the products and services they offer. Aquasafe ran short sessions on putting out VHF distress calls - a life-saving skill that boaters can't afford to be without. And the RNLI provided free lifejacket inspections and offered advice on boating safety issues.
One of the Yacht Haven's tenants and exhibitor at the Open Day, Kit Rogers of Jeremy Rogers Limited, said "this was a great opportunity for us to showcase the services we offer to the berth holders at Lymington Yacht Haven and to the wider boating public who were attracted to the Open Day. The boat show atmosphere on the day allowed easy interaction with a host of existing and new customers."
"The event was a great success and the feedback from our tenants, berth holders and visitors was really positive." said Edward Mead, Director of Lymington Yacht Haven.
A Lymington Yacht Haven berth holder, Kate Thornton remarked on the day "The marina open day had a real buzz about it and we were very impressed by the hive of activity in the marquee. We had not appreciated the wide range of services offered across the site and thank you for the opportunity to meet so many of the tenants under one roof. Our eldest grandchild had great fun racing on the sailing simulators while our youngest enjoyed having her face painted and testing out the model VHF radios, and they each had a huge grin on their face after our exhilarating RIB ride up the river; it was a great fun day for all of us."
Lymington Yacht Haven ran a free prize draw for a yacht owner to get their boat lifted and scrubbed which was won by berth holder Jonathan Brier of Crews Control.
A programme of Active Marina events has been active in marinas across the UK, including Plymouth, Fambridge and Largs Yacht Haven, helping boat owners and their crews get more out of their boating through a programme of training, cruising and social opportunities.
