The ITCA (GBR) Topper Nationals 2025 kicked off in Largs this week, welcoming over 200 young sailors from across the country for one of Britain’s top single-handed dinghy events. With bright skies and a steady breeze, the first races of the qualifying series got underway in ideal conditions – a spectacular sight with dozens of colourful Toppers stretching across the water.
This year’s Nationals features racing in the 4.2, 5.3 and 6.4 rigs, with fierce competition expected at the front of the fleets. For those newer to the sport, the Regatta Fleet offers a gentler introduction, focused on fun, games, and making friends – all while gaining valuable time on the water.

“Today’s Topper sailors are tomorrow’s talent,” said one event organiser, as spirits remained high despite forecasts of Storm Floris threatening to disrupt the schedule. “This is what it’s all about – being on the water and feeling good.”
The welcome to competitors has been warm and full of energy, with messages of encouragement echoing around the venue. With more racing to come, the focus remains on staying dry, sailing fast, and most importantly, having fun.
