Troon RNLI has bid farewell to its Trent class lifeboat RNLB Jim Moffat after more than 20 years of dedicated service.
Arriving in 2004, the Jim Moffat was funded by The Moffat Charitable Trust, Miss I F Harvey’s Charitable Trust, Mr A Boyd Tunnock MBE, and The Lifeboats of the Clyde Appeal. Since then, she has launched over 770 times, saved 17 lives, and aided 443 people.

One standout rescue occurred in January 2015, when she and Girvan lifeboat battled worsening weather to assist a stranded trawler, saving four crew members. This earned both Coxswains formal thanks from the RNLI.
Lifeboat Operations Manager Jim Redmond reflected:
“The Jim Moffat marked a new chapter for our station in 2004, so it’s sad to see her go. But our new Shannon class lifeboat RNLB Roy Barker VI will enhance our lifesaving capability with its advanced technology and manoeuvrability.”
As the Jim Moffat sails into retirement, her legacy will remain a proud part of Troon’s maritime history.
