A novel new sailing trophy, the 'Yacht Haven Quay Laying Up Cup', saw the largest ever number of entrants to a race in the Yealm Yacht Club’s popular Autumn Series.
Blessed with fabulous weather and a gentle offshore breeze, the fleet enjoyed a graceful downwind start from the river mouth, making a fine spinnaker bedecked spectacle as they rounded the Mewstone. However some seriously competitive sailing was clearly evident amongst the general bonhomie, and it wasn’t long before a couple of clear leaders started to emerge from the pack – possibly this was encouraged by the incentive of three prizes on offer!
Congratulations to Andrew and Chris Matthews on Satisfaction, winners of the Laying Up Cup, a free lift, pressure wash and re-launch at Yacht Haven Quay this winter (far more use than a piece of silverware!). In second place were John and Jan Leonard on Cunning Plan, who are the recipients of a free crane-out and racing scrub, and the coveted third prize of a free crew lunch in the Mess room Cafe goes to Zest, sailed by Adam Booth and Ian Kennedy.
Yacht Haven Quay would like to thank the Yealm Yacht Club's committee and hon. Sailing Secretary for their assistance in making this a thoroughly enjoyable day on the water, the 22 competing boats for taking part, and look forward to supporting more events with the club in the future.
