Who is the Club open to?
Anybody over the age of 25 who has an RYA Level 2 Powerboat qualification or equivalent. If you have relevant boating experience but do not have qualifications, you can join, and we will arrange and pay for you to do the RYA L2 course through Powerboat Training UK. If you are new to boating, please contact us to talk through how to become a member.
Do members part own the boats?
No. The capital cost of acquisition and the burden of depreciation, servicing, berthing fees, insurance, and maintenance are all carried by the Club.
Who owns the Club?
Lymington Boat Club is a trading division of Solent Rib Charters Ltd. SRC is a Lymington based company that started twenty years ago who are now the market leading Rib charter operator in the UK. SRC are masters of maintaining boats in superlative condition.
Do you offer day charter?
No. The only way to make use of the Club boats is to become a Club member.
Is there an induction when I join?
Yes. We offer a full day induction for you and your family. We are happy to show you around The Solent pointing out all of the best sights, destination and restaurants as well as the hazards to avoid. We will give you a separate short induction for each different boat the first time you book it.
How many people can go out?
Our boats take up to 6 people comfortably and ‘Sirocco’ our Scorpion Rib will accommodate 8. There are adult lifejackets onboard, but you will need to provide your own for children. There are no age limits although all those on board will need to be in good physical health. Dogs are not allowed on Club boats.
How much does it cost?
Our annual membership is £8,500 (inc VAT) for unlimited usage of the Club fleet. You can add a spouse or member of your family who lives at your home address as an additional helm for a cost of £1,000 per year. Only the member and this one additional person are permitted to helm the boats.
How do I book time onboard?
Members will be given a username and login to our booking App which can be downloaded to your mobile / tablet or accessed via the member’s portal on the Club website.
The App shows availability and allows you to book your session. Members can book a maximum of two sessions in advance. A full day booking is two sessions. As soon as you have used a ‘session’, you can book another.
A 'session' is:
- Morning – One hour before sunrise to 1pm
- Afternoon – 1.30pm to one hour after sunset
Members are also entitled to one 'Golden Ticket' per year. A Golden Ticket is a full day booking which can be made as far in advance as you wish. This is perfect if you wish to block off your birthday, anniversary, Bank Holiday Monday or for a special event.
Overnight bookings are also available on request providing the boat is not used after dark and is berthed in a marina/harbour overnight. Overnights require an afternoon and morning session.
Are there any cancellation charges?
No. Just use the App to remove your booking so that the boat shows as available to other Members. You may cancel your booking at any time and for any reason.
How many people will I be sharing the boats with?
We limit the number of members per boat to ensure you get the unlimited access to boats from your membership. As membership of the Lymington Boat Club expands, so will the fleet of boats. More members will lead to a bigger and more diverse fleet available for use.
Are the boats available all year?
Yes, we operate the boats every day of the year. Each boat is refitted once a year, a process that will typically take a week but refits are scheduled sequentially to maximise boat availability. ‘Zonda’ is fitted with an Eberspacher heater which makes her particularly comfortable on colder days. ‘Zonda’ and ‘Diablo’ both have weather screens which we fit in winter months.
What if I breakdown?
Thankfully this is not really an issue, but should the worst happen, we aim to get to you within an hour anywhere on the Solent. All of our boats are covered by Sea Start.
What kit do I need?
A picnic, plenty of water, warm clothes, sunglasses, fishing rod (perhaps), and your snorkel! Good quality waterproofs will keep you dry and warm. We provide all the safety equipment including adult lifejackets. The boats are surveyed and fully coded by the Marine Coastguard Agency for use as charter boats.
Can I fish on club boats?
Absolutely. ‘Bora’ is perfect for fishing with a full walkaround and spacious aft deck, but you are welcome to fish from any boat. We ask members to not clean fish onboard.
What are the weather restrictions?
These are mostly common sense. It is the combination of wind, tide strength and direction of flow that matter most. We think that Force 6 is a sensible limit before the day becomes too uncomfortable.
Where shall we go for our day out?
Lymington is the prime Solent location for easy access to the most desirable Solent destinations including Hurst Spit, The Needles, Alum Bay, Totland Bay, Colwell Bay, Yarmouth, Newtown Creek, Cowes, Beaulieu River and Poole. The list is endless!
Are there any good spectator events?
The Solent has many spectacular water-based events such as Cowes Week. See our website’s Events diary for a listing of our favourites.
Are there any additional Club benefits?
Yes. Members enjoy a 10% discount on both food and drink at the Haven Bistro, a 5% discount on marina petrol, and they receive electronic fobs to access all of the berth holder facilities.
Do you offer seasonal membership?
No, the minimum period of membership is twelve months. Most members pay their annual subs in one go but monthly payment is an option at a slightly higher price. Please contact us for details.
Do you always have vacancies?
Not necessarily. We control membership to ensure that we continue providing unrivalled access to Club boats. Experience shows that we are more likely to have vacancies for those joining in winter months than during peak season.
