The Solent is well known for being the ultimate playground for sailors.
On the South Coast of England between the mainland and the Isle of Wight, this popular cruising ground tempts every type of water sport enthusiast, with a huge number of races and regattas taking place each year, along with sheltered waters it has something to offer everyone. Approximately 30 miles long and 5 miles wide, it offers a magnificent coastline and an amazing variety of sailing conditions.
For day sailing and anchorages, choose a quiet natural harbour such as Newtown Creek or head for the hustle and bustle of Southampton. Beyond the Solent, to the West, there’s the natural harbour at Poole, Studland Bay and Sandbanks within easy reach, and Portsmouth to the East – one of the most historical harbours in the UK.

The Hut at Colwell Bay, IoW – 4.5 nm
A great beach restaurant and stunning sunsets, anchor up and they will take you ashore in a RIB.
Hurst Castle and Keyhaven - 3.5nm
The western edge of Hurst Spit is a good place for lunch with open anchorage against the pebble beach, but be careful of the strong tidal current when passing through Hurst.
Alum Bay, IoW – 6.5 nm
This gorgeous anchorage overlooks The Needles, and it’s a fantastic spot for swimming.
Freshwater Bay - 7.5nm
Just beyond The Needles, Freshwater Bay offers sheltered anchorage in northerly or easterly winds.
Yarmouth, IoW – 3 nm
A friendly harbour with plenty to do including beautiful walks and superb restaurants.
Newtown Creek, IoW - 5nm
A stunning anchorage in a nature reserve. The New Inn is within walking distance if you get the tides right.
Beaulieu River – 7.5 nm
Experience tranquillity and stunning natural beauty on the Beaulieu River. Tie up to one of the river moorings or visit the historic Buckler’s Hard.
Cowes, IoW – 9.5 nm
An iconic yachting destination and the starting point for the major yacht races in the Solent. If you have time, pop to The Folly Inn about 2 miles further up the River Medina.
