Folkboats – A welcoming route into racing, right on our doorstep.

One of the quiet success stories of British sailing is the continued strength of the Folkboat fleet – a class that combines beautiful classic lines with genuinely accessible, rewarding racing.

A recent Yachts & Yachting feature looking ahead to Folkboat Racing in 2026 highlights exactly why the class continues to thrive. With modest crews, competitive but Corinthian racing, boats that reward good sailing rather than big budgets, and a strong sense of fleet community, Folkboats keep owners involved year after year.

Here in Lymington, Folkboats remain a familiar and much-loved sight. What’s particularly refreshing about the Folkboat scene is that it shows how boat ownership doesn’t have to be extreme or exclusive. Classes like this thrive because they’re welcoming, multi-generational and rooted in local waters - exactly the kind of fleet activity that keeps marinas, clubs and harbours vibrant.

At Lymington Yacht Haven, we’re proud to support events such as Folkboat Week and to provide a welcoming home for active fleets that bring energy and a strong sense of community to the marina. The Folkboat fleet is a wonderfully mixed group of owners, united by close, honest racing on the water and a warm, sociable atmosphere ashore.

For active Folkboat sailors, we offer special rate pontoon berthing in the marina - helping to make it even easier to take part in the season and grow participation in the fleet.

With the Folkboat Nationals, weekly Solent racing and the much-loved Folkboat Week forming a natural rhythm to the season, it's a class that makes it easy to stay involved - even alongside busy lives.

If you're considering getting involved, Folkboat Week this August is the perfect opportunity to experience the class first-hand.

"There is something quietly compelling about Nordic Folkboat racing. It doesn't shout for attention, yet year after year it continues to grow across the Solent, drawing sailors who value good racing, good company and boats that reward skill on a reasonable budget."
