The RNLI's new lifeboat for Largs, the R A Wilson, was officially launched on 23 June. Miss Carolyn Elder, Director of Largs Yacht Haven, performed the naming ceremony by pouring a 25 year old malt whisky from a quaich over the Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat.
Robert Amory Wilson, the benefactor, was a chartered accountant who served with the Royal Navy during the Second World War reaching the rank of Lt Commander. He continued his maritime interest by owning a succession of yachts and dinghies. He created a trust by deed in 1999 before passing away in 2000. The RNLI are grateful to the trustees for their generous bequest to enable the purchase of this new lifeboat.
Largs Yacht Haven supports the RNLI through the Ambassador scheme and through local fundraising events. Several of the marina staff serve on the Largs lifeboat crew with the assistant manager, Dave Hewitt, serving as engineer and helmsman.
