On May 22nd 2014, Erica Revie headed off on an adventure that would see her challenged to her limits. An adventure that would see her sailing single handed around as many Scottish Islands as she possibly could, and cycling as many miles on each island when she got there. Sea sickness, winds and hills were all the obstacles that stood in Erica's way as she battled to complete the challenge
Amongst others, Erica sailed to Bute, Jura, Islay, Gigha, Colonsay, Mull and Lismore.
Erica's aim was to raise as much money as possible for two very deserving charities; Maggies Centres and the RNLI.
Originating in Edinburgh, Maggies centre provides support for people with cancer throughout the UK. Both practical and emotional support is provided, and is delivered free to those with, or affected by cancer. In Edinburgh Breast Unit, Erica is involved with the surgical care of patients with breast cancer. Erica says, 'It is clear that this is just one part of an often very difficult journey for patients, their families and friends'.
The RNLI is a charity that provides a 24 hour search and rescue service, with the aim of preventing loss of life at sea. Crew members are mostly volunteers, and are individuals who demonstrate real selflessness and extreme bravery. As a sailor from a young age, Erica has witnessed how situations can develop out of control for the most prepared sea-goer, and also how ferocious the sea can be when the weather gets bad. Erica says, 'That people volunteer to go to sea, sometimes in truly awful conditions, in order to save the lives of others is humbling'.
So far, Erica has managed to raise £1969.98 split between the two charities. If you would like to donate, you still can by visiting Erica's just giving page www.justgiving.com/teams/boatandbikechallenge.
