The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, based in Cowes and at Largs Yacht Haven, gives young people between the ages of 8 and 24 who are in recovery from cancer the opportunity to experience sailing. The majority of them have finished treatment and are in the very difficult process of trying to put their lives back together.
Thanks to support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust has been able to reach double the amount of young people in the past three years. At the moment the work is undertaken by chartering yachts but the £200,000 Extra Award from players will allow the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust to commission and purchase a yacht which will give them security of operation in Largs in the long term.
Dame Ellen MacArthur said: "We are completely overwhelmed. This will make a huge difference to both our new base in Scotland, and the number of young people in recovery from cancer we support. Thank you so much players of People’s Postcode Lottery - you made this happen!”
Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, Clara Govier, said: “Players will be delighted that money they have raised will be going to such a fantastic charity – helping the Dame Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust to reach more young people.”
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust was also given a Surprise Award of £25,000 along with 56 other charities supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. A whopping £5,103,000 was awarded to charities at the People’s Postcode Lottery Charity Gala.
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust opened their Largs Yacht Haven base in 2014.
