Eddystone eddystone race 2015 eddystone race 2015 2

16 June 2015

Over 70 boats took to Plymouth Sound to join the annual 26nm Eddystone Charity Sailing Pursuit to Eddystone Lighthouse.

The pursuit, which raises money for charities that benefit the human condition, has been sailed annually since 2002 and has now raised over £500,000. The 2015 pursuit was the largest to date with over £75,000 raised this year alone with funds spread between over 30 charities; all nominated  by race competitors.

The first wave of competitors started at 8am with start times staggered over the morning to allow for a friendly, even-paced pursuit. After rounding Eddystone Lighthouse, boats returned to Plymouth and finished in the Sound before all competitors enjoyed an evening of presentations, dinner and dancing at the National Marine Aquarium.

Steve Kitchen, Marina Manager at Plymouth Yacht Haven, was part of the crew on SY Pegasus from the Island Sailing Trust. Commenting on the pursuit, Steve said “It was such a stunning sight to see so many boats sailing in unison to the historic lighthouse. From Pegasus and the beautiful 24m LOA SY Tectona, to smaller day cruisers, it truly is an all-inclusive sailing event with thousands of pounds raised for good causes".

  • The All Spars Trophy awarded to the first boat home was won by SY Pearl who nominated Plymouth Youth Sailing as their chosen charity
  • The Sponsorship Award, awarded to the team who raised the most money for charity, was won by SY Sheer Indulgence for raising over £13,180
  • The Plymouth Yacht Haven Trophy awarded to the winning PYH berth holder, was won by Miranda of Wight who nominated Dart Sailability as their chosen charity
