After more than 20 years at the Yacht Haven, Tamsin reflects on her time here…

Having recently celebrated my 23rd year at Plymouth Yacht Haven, I’ve been reflecting on my time here and the part our Yacht Haven plays in the local community.
Conveniently located on the Mount Batten peninsula, minutes from the Plymouth Sound and with an uninterrupted view of Plymouth beyond, we’ve always felt a strong allegiance with the community that surrounds us. With the commitment to support local causes, but with so many to choose from we have had to focus. So, when opportunities come up to support causes which benefit those we serve, that is, our customers and tenants, we do all we can to support them.
We sponsor a wide variety of causes; from St.Luke’s Hospice, located just around the corner, providing specialist advice and support to people with life-limiting illnesses in the local area, to racing events like the Eddystone Charity Pursuit, now planning their 19th event, raising valuable funds for a variety of charities, and The Island Trust who organise residential and day-sailing activities for deserving young people (aged 13-19) to experience the joy of sailing.
With our annual open day, we invite locals, customers and the tenants who rent office space on the marina to join in with the summer fun. There’s always plenty to eat, drink, see and do! From a variety of stalls, live music, RIB rides, face painting, treasure hunt, surf simulator, water-based activities, visits from local sailing schools, the RNLI and Coastguard, it makes for a really fun-filled family day!
For a touch of glamour and excitement, we’ve hosted the magnificent finish of the bi-annual Fastnet race. A splendid spectacle, where sailors of all levels rub shoulders with non-sailors, on the water and off, to watch these glorious multi-hulls ghost up the Plymouth Sound. With the event lasting 7 days, we try to ensure that our bi-annual berth holder’s party coincides with either the beginning or the end of the race, so it’s a particularly exciting time of year and there’s always a fabulous atmosphere.
As for next year, we’re hoping to twin with Plymouth Regatta, which came to Plymouth Yacht Haven for the first time in 2018. Our mission: to make the Regatta a great success for the local community and all the sailors involved.
In the meantime, our thoughts turn to Christmas and our annual Christmas Lights competition. We’re looking for the biggest Christmas spectacle where the Yacht Haven is lit-up by festive boats throughout Devember.
I can’t deny it brightens up the whole place and gets us all in the festive spirit, so we look forward to seeing your entries!
