Warning: Boat Sales SCAM

04 July 2014

Plymouth Yacht Haven would like to draw your attention to a boat sales scam, which is fraudulently utilising the identity of one of our team, Ally Sinclair, from Plymouth Yacht Haven.

We know that the scam has posted boat sale adverts on www.boatshop24.com, although it may also be using other boat sales websites. When potential customers request more information, the advertiser is posing as Ally Sinclair and offering a premium rate number to call for further information.

If you request details about a boat for sale online, and the response you receive is shown as being from Plymouth Yacht Haven (or using the name Ally Sinclair), this is a SCAM. Please do not be drawn into calling the premium rate number.

Neither Plymouth Yacht Haven, nor any other company within the Yacht Havens Group, sell boats.  We are a marina group providing berthing for boats throughout the UK and the Netherlands. We do have boats berthed at our marinas which may be for sale, and there are bona fide yacht broker businesses based at our marinas, but Plymouth Yacht Haven does not sell boats directly. Please be assured that neither Plymouth Yacht Haven nor any of their on-site sales offices or tenants would ask customers for a deposit for a test sail.

Plymouth Yacht Haven does have a long term and loyal employee called Ally Sinclair. His identity is being used for this scam without his consent.

This scam has been reported to the boatshop24 website, to the fraud police in several countries, and the UK Fraud Office.

In several cases a potential purchaser and victim of this scam has paid a deposit of 10% of the boat value. We would advise that you NEVER part with money for the purchase of a boat online without first thoroughly verifying the legitimacy of the broker or vendor.

If you have any concerns and would like to get in contact with Plymouth Yacht Haven, please call us on +44 (0)1752 404231 or email plymouth@yachthavens.com
