With winter upon us, here are some helpful tips to ensure your boat is safe and secure.
LINES - for peace of mind over the winter, double-up lines using suitable sized man-made fibre rope. Avoid using shackles and chains on cleats, this can wear cleats and hamper boat movements in emergencies.
FENDERS - add extra fenders, you can never have too many during the winter, and the bigger the better! Avoid loading all fenders on guard rails; instead spread the load to stanchions, cleats and other secure points on deck.
HALYARDS - check that all halyards and loose lines are tied and secure to reduce wear and to ensure your neighbours get a peaceful night’s sleep.
HEATERS - When running heaters and dehumidifiers monitor the consumption via your meter as these appliances can be expensive to run. Check that your appliances are tested annually and are secured firmly.
FUEL - Top up with fuel to avoid condensation forming inside the tank.
ENGINE - If you are having your engine winterised, don’t forget that this must be done before your boat comes ashore.
