Setting aside the high heels and dress codes for Ladies Days of Ascot, Cheltenham and Goodwood, we rewrote the rulebook for this Ladies Day at Lymington Yacht Haven.
It was sun hats and smiles all round on Saturday 20th May for our ‘Ladies only’ sailing skills day hosted by Lymington Yacht Haven and Lymington Yacht Charters.
Ten happy ladies turned out to sail a 55ft Jeanneau yacht with fully qualified instructor Andrew and crew Katie for a cruise around the Solent giving them the chance to practice everything from working the winches to steering the boat under sail and really getting to know their halliards from their sheets!
The day started on the dock going through positioning of lines and fenders for mooring, a safety briefing and untying lines in preparation to set sail, taking in to consideration wind conditions and tide. The ladies spent a few hours sailing around, reversing, coming alongside, tacking, taking turns to helm and work the winches, experiencing general boat handling in the sunshine.
The happy crew anchored at Colwell Bay where they were collected by RIBs and taken ashore for lunch at The Hut. The wind picked up and the ladies were transferred to Yarmouth after lunch where the boat and skipper was waiting for them to sail back to Lymington.
The ladies really appreciated their day and a few commented on the lack of chiefs shouting instructions at them! Hopefully we’ll see more of these ladies take to the helm as their confidence grows.
Many thanks to our instructor Andrew and crew Katie from Lymington Yacht Charters, and to Lymington Yacht Haven's Office Manager Becki for organising the event.
